Késia Decoté - Colour Etude II

This night from Nick Storring's Riparian Acoustics opened with a pairing of Allison Cameron and Kurt Newman's cicada-like buzz-plucks that that seemed at first like an odd counterpart for a recital from this UK-via-Brazil pianist, especially when she played some spare, slow pieces from Linda Catlin Smith and from Storring himself. But when she turned her attention to the toy piano — especially on this piece from Omar Peracha that incorporates electronics via its own iphone app — the throughline on the night became clear.

[Riparian Acoustics has two intriguing events coming up in October: a night of "new music for baroque cello" with Elinor Frey at the CMC on Wednesday, October 3rd as well as a special presentation of Sarah Hennies' Contralto at TIFF on Wednesday, October 24th — screening her experimental documentary alongside live musical accompaniment from Thin Edge New Music Collective.]
