Monday Roundup #214

Community notes:

  • You might have heard some whispers about it, but Earlobe, "a website listing experimental music and sound art events happening in Toronto, Canada" is officially a thing, filling a much-needed void. Put together by some excellent community-minded folks, their webpage is minimal right now, but you can sign up for their weekly email list, whose first edition dropped today! And, as you might note in the listings below, Karen Ng — one of the earlobe-ists — is turning over her night at Wenona tomorrow (February 18th) to serve as a fundraiser for earlobe's hosting and other costs. Come support! Sign up!

Recording: Isla Craig

Artist: Isla Craig

Songs: For My Friends [Jennifer Castle cover] + Marbles

Recorded in The Sun Room at 918 Bathurst, February 2, 2025.

Isla Craig - For My Friends

Isla Craig - Marbles

Isla Craig has presented her music in a variety of configurations and with a revolving cast of collaborators, but by her own account, this was her first proper acoustic set, playing a guitar built by her luthier father. Playing in a trio format, she was joined here by Alex Lukashevsky (acoustic guit) and Matthew Coldwell (double bass) and dipped her toe in several eras of her songbook. The setlist zoomed outward from from her first album (one can compare the acoustic approach to the malleable, loping grooves of "Marbles" to a slightly more rockin' arrangement) to a more recent tribute to collaborator Jen Castle — all presented with a pleasing rolling gentleness, like a stroll through rural hillsides. Perfect sounds for a room full of adults, kids and babies on a winter afternoon.

A L M A - [excerpt]

Picking a room with good acoustics and good vibes to play an acoustic set, Isla Craig also picked pal Allie Blumas to open things up and set the mood. In their A L M A persona, Blumas brings spa music/new age vibes, offering a meditation exercise as much as a musical experience. Stripped back from previous offerings, the tools here were Digitakt and voice, with lots of space to relax in.

Monday Roundup #213

Community notes:

  • A special bit of self-promotion here to ensure everyone knows they're invited out to 918 Bathurst on Sunday (February 16th) to help celebrate Track Could Bend #100. It's been a wonderful surprise that the series would be going strong just shy of a decade along, so I've invited all the performers back to hang out. We'll draw some bands from a hat and gather friends and strangers to play together, plus hang out, nosh, work on a commemorative zine and more. Music from 5 to 7 and 8 to 11, do drop by for some chunk of that!

Recording: Ayal Senior & Kurt Newman

Artist: Ayal Senior & Kurt Newman

Songs: Yutori + I Alone Escaped

Recorded at The Tranzac's Southern Cross Lounge (Ayal Senior & Friends), January 12, 2025.

Ayal Senior & Kurt Newman - Yutori + I Alone Escaped

With a new batch of songs almost ready to hatch (see below!) Senior and Newman dug into the arrangements a little deeper, with the accompaniment moving from the most understanded of echoes to careening-off-the-rails dangerfests.

[Ayal Senior & Friends is back in the Southern Cross on Sunday (January 9th) with a special "public dress rehearsal" as they prepare to enter the studio to cut a new album.]

Recording: David Sait

Artist: David Sait

Song: [track 4]

Recorded at The Tranzac's Southern Cross Lounge (Ayal Senior & Friends), January 12, 2025.

David Sait - [track 4]

David Sait brought some songs and other inventions for his guzheng, as usual, exploring some new variations in tone and technique, including some cool bowing and (as heard here) some subtle shimmer.

Artist: future proof

Song: [excerpt]

Recorded at Wenona Lodge (Track Could Bend #99), January 7, 2025.

future proof - [excerpt]

This set from Bea Labikova and Raphael Roter continued their forward-looking electronics augmentations for their reeds and percussion, but also looked back (with Roter's opening dance solo) as a reminder that considering movement and the body has always been a central concern for this pair.

You can check out some more from this set over on youtube:

[Celebrating a big-round-number landmark, there are two special Track Could Bend events coming up in February! In the regular-time-regular-place department (Tuesday, February 4th at Wenona Lodge), TCB #101 is revisiting the series' very first show, with a solo performance from Allison Cameron and a trio set from Kayla Milmine/Bob Vespaziani/Michael Lynn. But then, on Sunday February 16th, TCB heads over to 918 Bathurst for its one hundredth show spectacular, with performers from over the past ten years joining together in ad hoc Bands From a Hat groupings. Come and celebrate with us!]

Lostworldsounds - Dark Cloud

Lostworldsounds - Loop Experiment

Continuing a local tour of sorts in celebration of the release of her new album, Michelle Breslin brought newer and older songs along for this set, plus a few experimental flourishes, like the psychedelic edge imbued in "Dark Cloud" and a brief loop pedal construction.
