Monday Roundup #141

Community notes:

  • Update on Ted Phillips' memorial & fundraiser
Thanks to the community's generosity, we had a successful fundraiser for Ted Phillips' memorial concert, which brought amazing sounds and lots of memories to The Tranzac last weekend. After covering expenses, we had a small surplus, so we are going to put it into the "Ted Fund", which will be used so that members of the community can go to concerts even in times of financial stress. We will make arrangements with some of the shows that Ted would have liked so that anyone can come to the door and say, "I'm here with Ted," and they can get in, no questions asked. We're going to work with Exit Points and Audiopollination as a sort of pilot project and see where it goes from there. (If you have any questions or comments about this, feel free to email Joe at mechanicalforestsound@gmail.com.)
Let's keep the memories alive, and keep Ted's spirit in our community.

Recording: Giui

Artist: Giui

Song: [excerpt]

Recorded at Yonge-Dundas Square (Intersection – Day 2), September 2, 2023.

Giui - [excerpt]

That particular Labour Day tradition returned once more this year — the Intersection Festival filling up the concrete plains of Yonge-Dundas Square with creative and adventurous music. As with last year's return from the pandemic pause, this was more stripped-back than in the "old days", with all of the music constrained to the big stage, which itself was a bit more cut off from the square by metal barricades. The square as a whole felt a little less, ah, pulsating than in the past — while there's still all sorts of random passers-by and carryings-on, the space felt a little more restrained overall. But on a mostly-beautiful day for standing around outside (with just one minor cloudburst to take the edge off the heat) the programming was mostly on-point, distracting a few people, chasing some away, and calling in a few in to take in the sounds.

Although theoretically a new group making its debut, this trio — of Kurt Newman (guitar, effects), Andrew Furlong (double bass) and Mark Zurawinski (drumkit) — was composed of musicans who have played together frequently in varying combinations. This outing saw them exploring clonks, skronks and screaming microloops — rather good fun!

But on a mostly-beautiful day for standing around outside (with just one minor cloudburst to take the edge off the heat) the programming was mostly on-point, distracting a few people, chasing some away, and calling in a few in to take in the sounds.

It somehow felt appropriate that estacio's set coincided with that one episode of adverse weather, windbursts threatening to topple gongs while a sudden rain shower sent the audience looking for cover. But that was in sync with the music's tectonic grumbles, giving way to electronic buzzing that felt very much like the inherent sounds of this fabricated space.

Recording: Naomi McCarroll-Butler

Fully half of this year's performances were solo sets — but in one sense, you can never play a solo set at Yonge-Dundas Square, as there's just too much environment filling in the edges. Beyond the sirens and shouts, the most sympathetic supplemental sound in Naomi McCarroll-Butler's set for bass clarinet and electronics was a lone bird, chirping away in one of the scraggly trees at the Square's perimeter.

The opening group was assembled by synthesist Michael Palumbo from the community he has gathered at his Exit Points monthly series — and if you were expecting an all-electronic jam then you might not have been following the series' evolutions, as here he was joined by Akim Angulo (shakuhachi flute), Joyce To (percussion), Behnoosh Behnamnia (kamancheh), and Yang Chen (percussion), allowing for a wide variety of textures and colours.

Our Way to Fall - (I Think) It's Time for Bed

It was five years to the week since this trio had first performed together, making this was an anniversary of sorts. Though time remains difficult to measure when there were a couple years of pandemic-related de-intensfication, I have inside info to note that even if this group hadn't performed a full-on public set since 2020, there have been a few behind-the-scenes gatherings. These folks remain fun and easy to play alongside, so keep an eye out for further manifestations.

Now with a second gig under their belt — as well as a formal group name — this trio may be evolving such that their most distinguishing feature is that they are being playful as much as they are playing.
