Recording: Priest/Driver/Clutton

Artist: Eldritch Priest/Ryan Driver/Rob Clutton

Songs: Blue in Green [composers: Bill Evans/Miles Davis] + Nature Boy [composer: eden ahbez]

Recorded at The Tranzac (Southern Cross Lounge), April 22, 2022.

Eldritch Priest/Ryan Driver/Rob Clutton - Blue in Green

Eldritch Priest/Ryan Driver/Rob Clutton - Nature Boy

Unsurprisingly, given the musical/scholarly circles he circulated in when he lived in Toronto, the now-Vancouver-based guitarist Eldritch Priest attracted a crowd to the Southern Cross that could have been assembled into some rather interesteing bands (or academic panels). In town to celebrate the release of his Omphaloskepsis album (out on Halocline Trance), Priest brought the amorphous "navel gazing" tone that's heard on the album but also provided some structure by giving double bassist Rob Clutton and synthesist Ryan Driver some charts — a middle ground perhaps, between a standards set and some boring formless nonsense.

Monday Roundup #67

Someday this space might be mostly concert listings again, but for now Monday roundups might include a romp through the MFS archives, some bandcamp suggestions, nods to a few livestreams, and sundry community notes (email me if you have anything that needs broadcast in the latter category!).

Community notes:

  • As you'll see in the concert listings below, the centrepiece of this week is definitely the Women From Space festival. It's worth amplifying that, with the additional note that the experience will be enriched with a series of "Space Talks", pre-concert chats presented on Thursday through Saturday by Musicworks Magazine featuring a wide variety of the festival's performers (including Sara Constant, Aline Homzy, Susanna Hood, Nicole Rampersaud, Paramorph Collective, Lisa Conway, Lori Freedman, Grace Scheele, TUSH and Ronley Teper) digging deeper into their work. [nightly at 7.]

Livestream nation:

  • Exit Points #26 (on Wednesday night) sees two sets of electroacoustic free-improvisation, from Pouya Hamidi/Black Galaxie/Esin Gunduz and Ayako Kato/Aida Khorsandi/Thispatcher, plus the usual community-engaged partitipatory explorations.

A Josh Cole Quintet - [set 2, 2nd piece excerpt]

I like it when musicians present a group with the indefinite article at the start of the name — an implication that the audience is witnessing just one of many possibilities that could have emerged on this occasion. This particular ad hoc quintet, convened for some improvisations while Kind Mind takes a month off in its usual slot in Josh Cole's Tranzac residency, took the rarely-seen step of inviting another bassist (Rob Clutton) along for the ride, and surrounded them with sounds from Jim Lewis (trumpet), Ryan Driver (analog synth) and Blake Howard (blanket filled with cymbals). Those ingredients combined for some fine squeak-clomp as sounds waxed and waned, those two basses working together underneath it all.

Recording: Never Was

Artist: Never Was

Song: Pebbles [composer: Madeleine Ertel]

Recorded at The Tranzac (Southern Cross Lounge), April 13, 2022.

Never Was - Pebbles

This group evolved from Joe Sorbara's musical and community building activites when he was presenting "Music By & For Ken Aldcroft", and has continued evolving as performances take shape around members' busy schedules. That means, for example, while Naomi McCarroll-Butler is occupied with other projects, Patrick O'Reilly has been brought in the fold to emboider the tunes with his guitar and effects. Here, you can hear him underpinning trumpeter Madeleine Ertel's piece with a calm bassline before heading off into the stratosphere. Look for the band in the Southern Cross on the second Wednesday of every month.

Song: Bicycle [composer: Nick Fraser]

Recorded at The Tranzac's Southern Cross Lounge (SynCirSundays), April 10, 2022.

Alex Fournier - Bicycle

Nilan Perera's Synaptic Circus Sundays (now abbrev.'d to SynCirSundays) has returned to the Tranzac on the second Sunday of the month, bringing a variety of boundary-pushing soundmakers together. The current State of Things calls for improvisation in the curation as well as performance, with some last-minute adjustments to the programme remixing the originally-programmed sets. Stepping in for Rob Clutton, Alex Fournier bravely undertook to stick to the originally-envisioned gameplan, playing a set of Nick Fraser's compositions. Having heard Clutton doing this a few times, it was interesting to see how Fournier brought a different sense of projection to the pieces, with a visceral physical commitment.

You can check out some video documentation from this set here:

[I will be guest-curating the next instalment of SynCirSundays on Sunday, May 8th and be presenting sets from David Parker (visiting from Kingston) as well LordAUK (new solo drones from Doomsquad's Jaclyn Blumas). The June show is already announced as well!]

The current State of Things calls for improvisation in the curation as well as performance, with some last-minute adjustments to the programme remixing the originally-programmed sets. Double bassist Alex Fournier stepped in as a sub for Rob Clutton to present some solo sounds, and also acted as the glue between William Davison's electroacoustic bricolage (including saw, knife, fidget spinner, musical box, fake eyeball, slinky, spike, etc.) and Mike Hansen's prepared turntables. The sort of set where two of the musicians were seen tuning forks as instruments, there was some fine sawin' and tumblin' in effect.

Recording: Kurt Newman & Karsten Stryker

Artist: Kurt Newman & Karsten Stryker

Song: Cherokee Shuffle

Recorded at The Tranzac's Southern Cross Lounge (Ayal Senior's Monthly), April 10, 2022.

Kurt Newman & Karsten Stryker - Cherokee Shuffle

Ah, another pleasant and cozy moment, reminiscent of the beforetimes, as Ayal Senior's monthly Sunday afternoon showcase at The Tranzac made its return. Like a pastry stuffed with savory fillings, the slot included three musical performances as well as some comedy from Nick Flanagan. (Mark a note in your calendar to be there on the next second Sunday of the month!)

Frequent guest Kurt Newman brought a newer collaborator, guitarist Karsten Stryker, for a quick acoustic set of bluegrass-informed duets. It's instructive to listen here for a hint of how the collaboration and improvisation in this music works in the moment, with the first pass through being a tentative "here's what I'm doing" communication before it starts to build up steam.

Kurt Newman is now also hosting the participatory Saturday Bluegrass Casual at The Tranzac every weekend, from noon to two.

This band was invented for the occasion of this show, but was just perhaps a good enough idea to pursue further. With a rock-solid rhythm section of Stargoon's Luca Capone on the skins and Justin Macri on bass, musical dabbler Joe Strutt (whose solo performance bandonym is Heraclitus Akimbo) worked to keep up on lap steel, adding some effects as well to a trio of open-ended cowpunk-gospel-groove compositions.

As usual the host led things off with a short leave-'em-wanting-more set composed of one longer new piece, a "blues" composed in dedication to someone called away too soon.

Someday this space might be mostly concert listings again, but for now Monday roundups might include a romp through the MFS archives, some bandcamp suggestions, nods to a few livestreams, and sundry community notes (email me if you have anything that needs broadcast in the latter category!).

Community notes:

  • Some good news for local music venues this week with the city making permanent a tax break program that dares to concede that the "highest purpose" of any given building in the city might not be a condo.
  • Meanwhile, dark times at NOW, with an announcement that the paper would be cutting back to one print edition per month now followed by the announcement of its parent company's bankruptcy. The company is saying that the paper won't be affected in the immediate term, but the future is certainly not looking very promising. Even with the sense that it has slowly been losing vitality over the course of the pandemic (and before), it feels deeply sad to think about the loss of one of the few media outlets paying attention to local culture.

Livestream nation:

Del Stephen - unknown

Taking the opportunity to gather with friends for the first time in a couple years (as well as celebrating the release of a pair of EP's), Del Stephen played and listened to a variety of carefully-selected groupings (and took a break for cake). The night closed with this solo piano selection, leavening the celebration with a thought for those now gone and not gathering with us.

Inviting everyone who had played in different combinations in the night's first set (as well as one bonus tape manipulator), this sextet wandered through a short series of sonic abstractions.

Taking the opportunity to gather with friends for the first time in a couple years (as well as celebrating the release of a pair of EP's), Del Stephen played and listened to a variety of carefully-selected groupings (and took a break for cake). After a short solo set, he called up this trio of musicians, all of whom have helped embellish his songs and poems in the past.
